The movie The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is the tale of Bilbo Baggins and how he and a group of dwarves overcame many obstacles to reach the lonely mountain where they must deal with the dragon Smaug so the dwarves can return to there city in the mountain. The Hobbit is a fantasy movie that utilizes different types of lighting to show off the many different locations and creatures throughout middle earth. The Hobbit uses high key lighting for scenes when the group is in the elven city of Rivendell where high key lighting shows the lively city that the elves live in. The benefits of using this type of lighting for this scene show the elves are good people and live in an uncorrupted city use of this light show the fantasy elements at its brightest with the city and the elves living there appearing magical and pure.

The hobbit uses low key lighting for majority of its scenes to show the dangerous nature of their journey as they travel through spider troll filled forests and goblin cities. The low key lighting is effective in showing the danger in each scene with the use of darker scenes showcasing creatures like Gollum who lives in a dark low lighted area.
The Hobbit utilized low key and high key lighting to show off the many fantasy elements of each scene showing the audience how each area of middle earth is both breathtaking and dangerous with the way it is shown with different light effects showcasing each scene and the many different elements of the environment that the group must travel through.
